Hawthorn

A member of the rose family, hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is a thorny, flowering tree or shrub native to temperate regions of Europe, North America, and northern Asia. The hawthorn plant has been used in Chinese traditional medicine for centuries.

This shrub is known as ‘Mother of the Heart’ traditionally. Hawthorn has anthocyanin’s in that have shown to support with heart health. It’s an interesting plant in that we cannot pinpoint one phytochemical that appears to be the effective chemical. It appears that it is a combination of constituents that make up the synergetic effects of this plant; for the health of the heart.

With the support of the heart one of the effects shown is a reduction in anxiety which is why it is in the NUDE SOUL bar.  In many traditional medicines, hawthorn was used for certain psychological conditions, including stress, anxiety, and even depression. Very often, hawthorn was offered to people who had recently had a broken heart, a loss of a family member, etc. it was said to help improve mood and repair a broken heart. Enzymatically, it turns out that hawthorn may have an impact on our hormonal levels, which would explain why so many cultures of the past believed in those health benefits!

Fun Fact: In the UK the leaves were traditionally eaten by school kids on the way to school and was called ‘Bread and Cheese’.

The anti-anxiety effect are subtle, gentle and a great addition to the NUDE SOUL bar. Hawthorn works well with all other herbs in the NUDE SOUL bar, especially cohesively well with the lavender in the bar.
